New England Aster - Aster novae-angliae – a native plant that brightens up roadsides, meadows and woody edges

Host plant to the Pearl Crescentspot   

Nectar Plant to the Painted Lady, Sulphur, Viceroy, Monarch

Location/habitat: full sun in moist to average soil, deer resistant, blooms mid-August through October, excellent nectar source for fall migrants

Violet to pink and shades in between, pinch in spring for bushier plants

Height: 2-5’

Companions with MILKWEED(SWAMP), GOLDENROD,JOE PYE, IRONWEED,  OTHER ASTERS, BEE BALM, ZINNIA,BLACK-EYED SUSAN

 

Stokesia Aster– a no-nonsense native that demands little and flowers freely in mid to late summer

Host  to the Pearl Crescentspot and nectar to Painted Lady, sulphurs, Monarch

Perennial native in colors of blue, pink and yellow, bloom mid to late summer

Location/habitat:  Loves it hot, bright and dry  in well-drained soil

Height: 3 -4’

Companions with nectars: HYSSOP, PURPLE CONEFLOWER, JOE PYE, BEE BALM, BLACK-EYED SUSAN, IRONWEED

 

White Wood Aster – Aster divaricatus – a fairyland of glistening white, small daisies blooms in September and October          

Host plant for the  Pearl Crescentspot

Nectar plant for the Viceroy, Monarch, Painted Lady

Location/habitat: Naturalizes in shade, average to dry soil or moist shade, found in woods and along roadside, part shade –shade, native, deer resistant…but bunnies love them.
